Bath and Body scrubs are used for sloughing off dead skin cells to smooth out
the skin and promote healthier softer skin. This process is called exfoliation.
Body scrubs are made with shells, seeds, sugars, salts, sands, nuts,
meals, herbs, flowers, and a variety of other ingredients. These create the
abrasiveness needed to gently scrub the skin. Some of these may seem a bit
harsh, but when used with natural oils, moisturizers, and vitamin e, they are
actually quite gentle and effective. Sugar scrubs are a favorite as they are more
gentle because they dissolve more quickly, giving just the right amount of
exfoliation needed. If you would like to try a simple exfoliation at home, you will
be surprised to find some simple ingredients to use right in your pantry. Grits,
corn meal, sugar and plain salt works very well. If you have fine sea salt, even
better. Choose one of these as your exfoliator. Add this to some honey or one of
your favorite lotions or creams. Exfoliators can be as thick or as thin as you like,
but the thinner ones are usually more messy. You can add some of your favorite
cooking oil, preferably olive oil and if you have some flavoring or extract to
scent. Mix all of your ingredients together and you have a homemade body
scrub. You can scrub your body by using gentle circular motions. After
exfoliating rinse yourself clean. Your skin should feel soft and smooth. If you
don't have time to do this, a wash cloth can give you a mild exfoliation that is not
as effective but still is beneficial. Regularly exfoliating helps to promote healthy
skin and prevent clogging of the pores, which often leads to some forms of body
acne. Most recommendations are to scrub 1-2 times a week.
